Chime Calculator

How-To

  1. Select a musical scale or chord and the length of the longest chime you'd like
  2. Cut pipes to the lengths the calculator provides. For your scale to work, each chime must be cut from the same pipe.
  3. Drill a hole through each chime, this is where you will string the chimes together. You can calculate exactly where to drill the hole by multiplying (length of the chime * .224) Or you can do this by ear without measure, this is my preferred method. Just hold the chime between your thumb and index and strike the chime. Adjust your finger placement until the chime sounds the best.
  4. String the chimes however you like. Here’s a cool way to do it. You’ll need something at the top to string the chimes through and act as an anchor (usually a round piece of wood)
  5. You’ll something at the top to string them through (usually a round piece of wood)
  6. Hang something from the center to strike the chimes (sounds best usually if it strikes the chimes in their centers)
  7. Add an additional string through the center of the anchor and hang something to strike the chimes (sounds best usually if it strikes the chimes in their centers) A lot of chimes have a paddle or weight hanging on the same string as the striker to make the striker move more
  8. Decorate if you’d like!
